Ryan Institute for Market Driven Education (RIMDE) is collaborating with the WIDE World, developed at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (WIDE World), beginning in early February 2008 to offer an online course on Multiple Intelligences as a pilot program for more than 100 educators of Ryan International group of institutions. The theory of Multiple Intelligence was developed by Prof. Howard Gardner from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a course led by the WIDE World instructors will surely help Ryan International teachers to address the needs of their students with different learning styles and strengths.
This online course comprises of 12 weeks professional development and will involve many teachers from institutions all over the world. They will be working in school-based teams and will join study groups led by WIDE World coaches from around the world. As in other WIDE World courses, participants in the MI course will collaborate with other educators in their school-based teams and will complete course assignments that require to apply what they are learning in their classroom settings and discuss/reflect on the outcomes with their teammates and study group colleagues.
An awareness of the Multiple Intelligence (MI) theory will stimulate the teachers to find more ways of helping students in their classes and they can allow them to safely explore and learn in many ways. Adults can help students understand and appreciate their strengths, and identify real-world activities that will stimulate more learning.
It is surely the first time in India that 115 teachers from a single educational group (Ryan) have joined as a combined group to enroll for an online course specially using technology as a tool. The course will develop one's understanding of how Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory defines and describes intelligence, the ways in which Multiple Intelligences theory can support teaching and learning practices, how one can apply MI theory well according to one's goals, and how one can learn effectively in an online environment. The kick-off workshops for the participants was directly conducted by the WIDE consultants in Surat and Delhi on 2nd and 4th February 2008 respectively. The online orientation of the course has begun from 7th February 2008, with participations from approx.200 teachers worldwide from China, Canada, United States, Iran, Nigeria, and Turkey. Our Indian teachers across the nation will be communicating, interacting and sharing ideas with various teachers through their different study groups.
Mrs. Grace Pinto, the Managing Director of Ryan International group exclaims, "We render all the due credit for our success to God and RIMDE for their efforts in availing the professional development services of WIDE World at Harvard Graduate School of Education in developing our teachers on the critical theory of Multiple Intelligence. We are confident that our efforts will enhance our teachers to the world of interactive learning and teaching. This course is just a small seed which is being sowed between our respective institutions and will soon cater to lot of mutual initiatives in the days to come. Very soon, we aim to develop several Ryan International Group of Institutions faculty as WIDE World coaches within our institutions."
Mr. David Zarowin, Executive Director of Harvard WIDE, says: "We are thrilled to be collaborating with Mrs. Pinto and her colleagues on this initiative aimed at incorporating Multiple Intelligences theory into the practice of Ryan International educators. As our collaboration develops in coming months, our aim is to develop Ryan educators as online coaches for an expanded program with the Ryan schools as well as other schools with which they are associated. Such capacity building efforts are a hallmark of the WIDE World program and we are delighted that Ryan International's leadership team has the vision to put such a plan into action."
This initiative has been forwarded as a unique claim to the "Limca Book of Records'' for being the largest online group of teachers from a single educational group to ever join an ONLINE teacher education course through Internet from India.
