Kashmir shutdown marks Maqbool Bhats death anniversary

Streets across Jammu and Kashmir wore a deserted look here on Monday following a day-long shutdown called by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) to mark the 24th death anniversary of its founder Maqbool Bhat.

Srinagar, Feb 11 : Streets across Jammu and Kashmir wore a deserted look here on Monday following a day-long shutdown called by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) to mark the 24th death anniversary of its founder Maqbool Bhat.

Businesses remained closed as people supported the strike call given by APHC and other major separatist groups.

Officegoers, however, rued the fact that they still had to go to work despite the strike.

"Office goers are facing much problem this time because they have to go to office and if they don't they will be suspended or they will be given some other punishment," said Hilal Khan, a resident.

Meanwhile, others said the Hurriyat needed to rework their strategy so as to have a more effective outcome.

"I think the strike is not a solution for it. We are doing the strike for last 20 years but there has been no outcome out of the strike yet. I think the Hurriyat members need to change their strategy," said Khursheed, another resident.

Bhat, convicted for killing an intelligence officer, was hanged in New Delhi on February 11, 1984.
