Police seized ten kilograms of heroin worth 500 million rupees from Phagwara in Punjab and have arrested three suspected drug peddlers, an official said.Acting on a tip off, police intercepted the accused as they were trying to smuggle the heroin out of the state.

Rakesh Aggarwal, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kapurthala, said a case has been registered.

"These people used to get directions from abroad on phone, following which they used to collect the consignments and then supply it further on," Aggarwal added.

Out of the three accused, one was linked to the militant Babbar Khalsa outfit.

India is viewed as a major transit point for drug smuggling to the West.Heroin is derived from morphine, a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seedpod of the Asian poppy plant, and appears as a white or brown powder.
