Mehbooba Mufti seeks troop reduction in Kashmir

Peoples Democratic Partys (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has sought a reduction of troops in Jammu and Kashmir.

Srinagar, Apr 9 : Peoples' Democratic Party's (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has sought a reduction of troops in Jammu and Kashmir.

"We are committed to the reduction of the troops from the civilian areas. I acknowledge that something has been done in this regard, but it is not enough. Forces should go back to the barracks. The special laws are also no longer required in the state," said Mehbooba.

"It is the policy and agenda of our party. It will figure in our party's forthcoming programmes. I'm hopeful that we will be able to materialise the dreams we have for Jammu and Kashmir," Mehbooba added.

Mehbooba had recently attended the two-day Pugwash conference on "regional stability" in Pakistan where she had urged an early and peaceful solution to the five-decade-old Kashmir dispute.

She said that the insurgency in the Himalayan state was on the wane.
