Kolkata, April 4 : At least 20 passengers were killed after a bus fell into the Kestopur Canal off VIP Road.
Most of the victims were school students returning from their school in the afternoon. They died from suffocation as the bus got struck in mud. The victims were from the Rajarhat area of the city.
The accident occurred shortly before the bus reached the terminus from the city's Esplanade area.
Disaster Management Group divers and fire department officials rushed to the spot, but by then most of the bus passengers had died.
The bodies were taken to nearby nursing homes like Apex, Charnock, Uma and Swastic. Residents blocked the road to protest against the traffic police for not taking punitive action against errant drivers.
