New Delhi, Delhi, India
The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and DuPont signed a memorandum of understanding to promote the cause of green building design and certification in India. This was signed today between Thomas F. Schuler, Vice President & General Manager, DuPont Building Innovations and Dr R K Pachauri, Director General, TERI at the Talking Tomorrow Lecture Series organized by TERI BCSD India, a strong industry body of 76 corporate members that engage with TERI on sustainable development, environmental management and corporate responsibility.
Speaking at the event, Thomas F. Schuler, Vice President & General Manager, DuPont Building Innovations said, "DuPont has a long tradition of using science and innovation to deliver advanced products to the marketplace, enabling architects and designers to build sustainable, cost-efficient building."
Ms Mili Majumdar, head of TERI's Green Building GRIHA project while commending the efforts of DuPont said "Buildings are responsible for at least 40% of energy use in most countries and are major contributors to global emissions. Energy efficiency in buildings is very crucial in Indian context since construction sector is growing at a very fast pace. TERI has been in the forefront of spreading knowledge on energy efficiency in built environment over several years and this MoU shall enable spread awareness and information on - applicability of building wraps and vapour breathable radiant barriers in making of energy efficient buildings"
TERI and DuPont are thought builders in the area of sustainable building design and DuPont is a leading provider of science-based building innovations in this area. Through this memorandum of understanding they agreed to jointly promote the cause of green building design and certification in India. Roli Jindal, Business Manager, DuPont Building Innovations said, "DuPont has several practical solutions to make buildings that are more energy efficient and manage resources better, such as building wraps, vapour breathable radiant barriers, cementitious insulated plain and ornamental panels for exterior cladding, honeycomb grids to make driveways without paving to avoid rainwater run off and environment friendly pondliners for rainwater harvesting."
TERI and DuPont also agreed on the need to have vapour breathability for a sound building envelope in the hot or mixed climate zones in India, where using vapour barriers could lead to moisture problems. Subject to approval by the Technical Advisory Committee set up by the Government of India, TERI agrees to recognize the effective design and use of air and water barriers in the building envelope, under the GRIHA rating system for Green Buildings.
Delivering the keynote address at the Talking Tomorrow lecture series organized by TERI, Thomas F. Schuler underlined the DuPont is commitment to the cause of sustainable building design. A range of building design ideas were presented to the distinguished audience comprising leading builders, policy makers and architects involved in green building design.
Thomas F. Schuler further emphasized that building codes and practices must not be copied from one country to another without taking into consideration local climates. He added, "I urge opinion leaders and policy makers in India to take advantage of the learning that other countries have already gone through, to frame building codes and practices suitable to the Indian environment."
