Top Hizbul leader arrested in Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday arrested a top Hizbul Mujahideen leader.

Srinagar, April 3 : Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday arrested a top Hizbul Mujahideen leader.

According to police, Junaid-ul-Islam, chief spokesman of the Hizbul Mujahideen militant group, was arrested during a raid in a house in Srinagar.

"Also very closely associated with top leadership of Hizbul, Junaid-ul-Islam, had been a spokesman for the group for the last 15 years and is the group's third most influential figure and I am sure the arrest of Junaid-ul-Islam will definitely cause a dent in the militancy. I am sure, as we go along, we will get more success," B. Srinivasan, a senior police officer told a news conference.

The arrest comes two days after two senior members of the group were killed in a gun battle by security forces.

Earlier in the day, two militants and a civilian were killed in a gun battle in Kashmir, police said.
