Students protest against OBC quota in Supreme Court

Students demonstrated against quotas for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in higher educational institutions in the Supreme Court premises on Friday.

New Delhi, Apr 25 : Students demonstrated against quotas for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in higher educational institutions in the Supreme Court premises on Friday.

"We want the Supreme Court verdict to be implemented in its right spirit," said Kaushal, a resident doctor, AIIMS.

Around 300 students from AIIMS, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi University, IIT-Delhi and government- run medical colleges gathered here to take part in the protest.

A clash ensued as police chased the students out of the court premises.

According to sources, around ten students were injured in the clash. The injured were admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

On April 10, the apex court had upheld the Government's decision of 27 per cent quota for OBCs in higher educational institutions, while pronouncing its verdict on the constitutional validity of the controversial law.

The apex court had decided that the Central Government was legally right to provide OBC quotas in higher educational institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS).

The apex court, however, had asked the Government to exclude the creamy layer from the reservation quota.
