New Delhi, Apr 22 : Union Minister for Panchayati Raj Mani Shankar Aiyar will inaugurate a three-day national convention of presidents of zilla parishads and intermediate panchayats here today.
The convention is being organised to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the 73rd amendment of the Constitution giving birth to the Panchayati Raj system.
The amendment provides for reservation of one-third seats for women in panchayats.
Around 7000 elected representatives of panchayats from across the country are expected to attend the convention.
During the convention, participants will discuss the current situation of Panchayati Raj in their states and evolve a road map for the future.
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi will attend the convention on the last day.
