Patna, April 21 : In an initiative to protect animals and birds from scorching heat during this summer, authorities at the Patna zoo have installed fans and sprinklers.

Arrangements have also been made to ensure that there is adequate drinking water so that the animals do not dehydrate.

Besides, special medical facilities have been arranged for animals to bear the rising mercury by giving them bath thrice a day.

According to officials, with the onset of summer, the animals get irritated when the high temperature is high and it is necessary to keep them cool and provide them with a near-natural habitat.

"During summers, we make sure that they have enough drinking water, we provide them with energizing drinks, and give them anti sun-stroke medicine," said Rakesh Kumar, the Director of the Patna Zoo.

There are around 1,180 animals at the Patna zoo.

Visitors to the zoo were pleasantly surprised to find coolers fitted next to inmates' enclosures.

"It is very hot but we can see that the animals have been provided with a lot of facilities. They have been provided with showers. It feels good to see all this," said Nitesh Singh, a visitor.
