Mumbai, Apr 15 : Minister of State for Labour Oscar Fernandes on Tuesday said that the Central Government is considering a proposal for introducing medical cover for 90 per cent of the workers in the unorganised sector.
Speaking at the renovation function of a model hospital of the Employees State Insurance Scheme at Andheri, Mumbai, Fernandes told Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and other guests that workers from the organised sector, which constitute a minor portion of the country's workforce, are currently covered under various governmental schemes like the Centre's Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) and the Employees State Insurance Scheme (ESIS).
The medical cover would be an addition, he added.
The hospital when completed will help over one crore employees and their family members. Almost 400 million people work in the unorganised sector.
