Delhi Punjabis celebrate Baisakhi

Delhi is a city, which has a sizable population of people from Punjab and they have been celebrating the festival during the week-end.

New Delhi, April 14 : Delhi is a city, which has a sizable population of people from Punjab and they have been celebrating the festival during the week-end.

A Baisakhi fair-cum-cultural programme was organized by the Punjabi and Sikh Welfare Society in the Janakpuri area in West Delhi.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Sri Prakash Jaiswal, inaugurated the festival, which attracted over 8,000 people .

Extending Baisakhi greetings Sri Prakash Jaiswal said that Delhi was not just the capital of the country but it was the heart of India.

Punjabi and Sikh Welfare Society President Sardar Surjeet Singh Duggal presented a Saropa to Sri Jaiprakash Jaiswal and Jai Prakash Agarwal on this occasion.

The cultural programme organized on the occasion comprised Punjabi folk songs, Bhangra and Giddha dances.

Ishmeet Singh of the Star Voice of India fame along with little master Vyom and Vibhor Parashar were the main attractions at the programme. They made people dance along with them.

Apart from the celebrations, 51 needy widows were presented sewing machines. The physically disabled were given 11 Public Call Office tricycles on the occasion.

Participants in the programme included Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President Jai Prakash Agarwal, Delhi Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee President Paramjeet Singh Sarna, Member of the Minority Commission (Govt. of India) Harcharan Singh Josh and MDH Masala chairman Dharampal.
