Lucknow, Apr 12 : Over 40 per cent of voters today exercised their franchise in the two Lok Sabha by-polls and three Assembly constituencies elections in Uttar Pradesh.
"Polling in Lok Sabha seats, Khalilabad and Azamgarh and Assembly constituencies, Bilgram (Hardoi), Colonelganj (Gonda) and Moradnagar (Ghaziabad) passed off peacefully with no reports of any untoward incident from anywhere," said State Chief Election Officer, A K Bishnoi.
Bishnoi further said that the poll percentage was over 40 per cent, including 33 per cent in Khalilabad, 41 per cent in Azamgarh, 54 per cent in Bilgram, 44 per cent in Colonelganj and 53 per cent in Moradagar.
"The percentage might vary after compilation of data coming from all the constituencies," he said.
In Bilgram, Samajwadi Party leader and former Minister Dayaram Prajapati was detained for canvassing in a restricted area.
The Azamgarh by-poll was necessitated after Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Ramakant Yadav lost Lok Sabha seat after he joined the Samajwadi Party (SP).
Elections were necessitated in Colonelganj and Muradnagar due to defection of the winning candidates and in Bilgram due to death of the sitting MLA.
In West Bengal, around 70 per cent votes were polled in Kharba Assembly by-poll in Malda District.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Mahabub-ul-Haque of Congress. The Congress fielded his son Mehboob this time.
The counting for all these seats will take place on April 16.
