The Central Government today launched the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, a health insurance scheme, for workers in the unorganised sector.

New Delhi, Apr 1 : The Central Government today launched the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, a health insurance scheme, for workers in the unorganised sector.

The scheme envisages providing smart card-based cashless health insurance cover upto 30,000 rupees annually to the people living Below Poverty Line (BPL). It will also cover hospitalisation charges.

A sum of 250 crore rupees has been earmarked for the scheme in the current fiscal. 120 districts of the country are being covered in the first phase in the current fiscal.

Smart Cards have already been issued in Haryana and Rajasthan to be followed by Delhi.

The scheme was launched on October 1, 2007.

The Centre has already issued guidelines to the states to ensure smooth implementation of the yojana.
