Omar Abdullah calls for truce with militants during Ramadan

National Conference chairman Omar Abdullah has urged New Delhi and militants to call a halt to their hostilities during Ramadan.

Chadoora (Jammu and Kashmir), Sept. 7 : National Conference chairman Omar Abdullah has urged New Delhi and militants to call a halt to their hostilities during Ramadan.

"A ceasefire has been declared in the region in times of worse internal security situation and strenuous Indo-Pakistan relations. Everyone can feel the difference now on both fronts - separatist violence has ebbed and Indo-Pakistan relations are their best in a long time," Omar Abdullah said on the sidelines of a public meeting.

He said New Delhi should take the initiative and announce a ceasefire. "It should also, then do the groundwork to initiate talks," he added.

Ramadan starts from September 13.

In recent weeks, the overall violence levels remain significantly low compared to previous years, and this is being credited to the ongoing peace dialogue between India and Pakistan.

Both countries claim Kashmir in full, but rule it in parts. India says Pakistan has not done enough to curb militants operating from its soil, a charge Islamabad rejects.
