Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister condemns Maoist attack

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajashekhara Reddy on Friday condemned the suspected Maoist attack in Nellore in which three people were killed and former Chief Minister N. Janardhana Reddy escaped unhurt.

Hyderabad, Sept 7 : Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajashekhara Reddy on Friday condemned the suspected Maoist attack in Nellore in which three people were killed and former Chief Minister N. Janardhana Reddy escaped unhurt.

Reddy said the Maoists were carrying out such attacks in an attempt to assert their existence.

"It is unfortunate that Naxals (Maoists) blasted a landmine in Nellore. For the last three years the government has taken stringent action to contain the Naxals. And so, to prove their existence they have carried out the attack," Reddy said.

Earlier today, at least three people were killed in a land-mine blast triggered near Nellore.

A convoy carrying former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Janardhan Reddy narrowly escaped the blast.

Reddy was heading towards Tirupati when one of his cars was destroyed by the blast.

Reddy and his wife and Minister for Child Welfare, Rajyalakshmi were declared safe.

Police suspect the involvement of Maoists, who control vast tracts of forest straddling Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
