Muslims in Mumbai demand implementation of Srikrishna Report

Muslims in Mumbai on Thursday demanded action against those indicted in the Srikrishna Commission Report on the 1992-93 communal riots in the city.

Mumbai, Sept 6 : Muslims in Mumbai on Thursday demanded action against those indicted in the Srikrishna Commission Report on the 1992-93 communal riots in the city.

The riots that followed the demolition of Babri Masjid in December 1992 had claimed 900 lives, mostly Muslims.

Justice to the riot victims has been slow, alleged the protestors.

"Purpose of the protest is to pressurise the government to fulfil its commitments made to the riot victims. It is important for people to raise their voices," said Sarfaraz Arzu, a social activist.

Muslim groups for long have been demanding action against the culprits, holding protests and asking the Supreme Court to get involved.

The one man Commission, which was formed to probe into the 1992-93 riots in Mumbai, had indicted many politicians, including Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray and his senior party colleagues including Manohar Joshi and Madhukar Sarpotdar.

It has also indicted 31 policemen and an "effete" political leadership that failed to arrest the violence. The commission also accused the then Mumbai police joint chief R D Tyagi of shooting nine Muslim boys during the riots. Tyagi was tried and acquitted in 2003. None of the other policemen named have been convicted yet.

"All the atrocities done by the policemen should not occur again. Why are Muslims not getting jobs in the police force? I want action be taken against them (indicted policemen)," said Noorjahan Agha, a riot victim.
