Chennai-based Huclin Research Limited (HRL), an independent Clinical Research Organization (CRO), has acquired an order for contract research, worth Rs. 16 crores from US-based MNC. "Since we are contractually bound by an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement), we are unable to reveal the name of our client," said Dr. Mahalingam Vasudevan, Executive Director, Huclin Research Ltd. (HRL).
Set across 16,000 sq. ft. at TICEL BioPark Ltd, Chennai, Huclin Research Limited (HRL) was started in July, 2006 with a share capital of Rs. 7 crore. "Our research on the current contract will include Bio-Equivalent Study and Method Development. To fulfill contractual obligations, HRL requires 50% of resource utilization. And moreover, 15 Indian & 6 global companies have audited our infrastructure and we look ahead to 2-3 orders by this year end," he added.
"Any new drug discovery will award the company with 20 years of patent rights. After which, the company forfeits it and the formula can be used by all industry players. A pharmaceutical player who then engages in making a similar drug using the same formula must prove that its new drug is the same as that produced by the finder. Pharmaceutical companies mostly outsource this research activity, which is where HRL steps in.
In the next 3 years, close to USD 40 billion worth drugs will be coming out of their patent period globally. A fact, that augurs well for the industry. In the near future, we expect a sizeable chunk of this business," he further added.
