Chamba (Himachal Pradesh), Sept 6 : The Government of Himachal Pradesh has introduced a chopper service to the Bharmour Temple, which is located at an altitude of 14,000 ft., and overlooks the Manimahesh peak.
Located on the banks of the Manimahesh Lake, the temple is an important pilgrimage site, and is considered the abode of Lord Shiva.
This will be the first such air service to a pilgrimage spot in Himachal Pradesh, said Naresh Kumar Latt, Additional District Magistrate of Bharmour.Previously, pilgrims had to trek a 16 kilometer steep climb from Chamba to the Manimahesh Lake. But with the helicopter service, they can now fly right up to Gaurikund, which is 1.5 kilometers from the temple.
Thousands flock to Bharmour annually for a pilgrimage, which starts after Janmashtami.
Tourism is the mainstay of Himachal Pradesh. Around 500,000 domestic tourists and 150,000 foreign tourists visit the state every year.
