A Chinese freight ship, carrying 6,1000 metric tonnes of iron ore, is in a precarious condition after its engines snapped, tilting it on one side off the Taneerbavi coast near Mangalore.

Mangalore, Sept 6 : A Chinese freight ship, carrying 6,1000 metric tonnes of iron ore, is in a precarious condition after its engines snapped, tilting it on one side off the Taneerbavi coast near Mangalore.

Caught in the shallow water, M.V. Chang Lemin, is carrying 21 sailors of various nationalities as crewmembers.

According to the deputy conservator of the New Mangalore Port, Captain V.K. Vasvani, the ship left the dock today morning and after two hours there was an SOS call from the ship, saying their engines had stalled.

The Coast Guard immediately swung into action and got in touch with the sailors and are presently continuing rescue efforts.

Eritrean Frieghter M.V. Den Den had capsized in the same locality on June 23 this year.

Marine engineers are closely monitoring the situation as dangers of oil spill looms large.
