One dozen peacocks stolen from Pune Zoo

Unidentified miscreants have stolen a dozen peacocks from Punes Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park.When we examined the cage, we found that the thieves had cut the wire of the cage and got inside. Out of the 13 peacocks that we house in the zoo, they stole 12 of them - four males and eight females, said Neelam Kumar Kher, the Director of the Zoo.

The thieves also stole two sandalwood tree saplings from the zoo.

The city police have launched a probe into Tuesday night's incident.

Peacock is India's national bird and is listed as a 'Schedule 1' bird under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972.

The theft of a peacock is an offence punishable with maximum of seven years in prison and fine of five million rupees, in case of a conviction.
