Airport Economic Regulatory Authority Bill introduced in Parliament

The Bill for setting up the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) was introduced in the Lok Sabha today by the Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel.

New Delhi, Sep 5 : The Bill for setting up the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) was introduced in the Lok Sabha today by the Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel.

The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India Bill seeks to provide for the establishment of an independent regulatory authority, comprising of a chairperson and two members to be appointed by the Central Government.

The Bill also lays down the powers and functions of the regulatory authority, which will include determining the tariff structure for aeronautical services, amount of development fees in respect of major airports and amount of passenger service fee, and to monitor the performance standards relating to quality, continuity and reliability of service.

The authority will also impose penalties in cases of wilful non-compliance.

The need for setting up of a regulatory authority was recommended by the Naresh Chandra Committee that prepared a road map for civil aviation sector.
