Forest authorities in Bihar have rehabilitated over 40 migratory birds of a rare species from the capital.
Patna, Sept 27 : Forest authorities in Bihar have rehabilitated over 40 migratory birds of a rare species from the capital.
The Sanjay Gandhi Zoological Park here is currently home to 42 injured birds that the zoo authorities had rescued from a nearby school.
Officials said a branch of a tree had fallen in the Danapur Kendriya Vidyalya recently following heavy rains, injuring these birds. Many of the rescued birds are chicks, still unable to fly on their own.
"As soon as we got the information on September 24 that a branch of a tree at Danapur Kendriya Vidyalya has fallen down, we rushed to the spot. We saw a number of birds and their chicks lying injured. Nearly all the chicks could not fly, so we decided to rescue them immediately," said Shashi, the veterinary officer at the zoo.
Most of the rescued birds are suffering from rib and foot fractures. They have been medically treated and are being given extra care at the zoo.
Some of these winged creatures also include migratory birds called the "Open Bill Stork'.
"The birds were kept in the hospital and proper medical attention was given to them. Our effort is that they should be treated well and all should get healthy soon. We will be keeping some of these birds in our zoo, as we don't have the Open Bill Stork here, while the rest will be released into their natural habitat soon," said Subhash Sharma, the deputy director of the zoo.
Spread over an area of 158 acres, Sanjay Gandhi Zoological Park is home to 1,055 species of animals and 194 species of birds.
