HCC (Hindustan Construction Company), a leading infrastructure construction and development company, in a joint venture with Alpine Mayreder, Austria and Samsung Corporation, South Korea, has bagged a prestigious contract worth Rs. 693.61 crore + Euro 1.457 crore, totalling Rs. 774.64 crore*, excluding DVAT, from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). This order is for the design and construction of two underground stations and a tunnel between New Delhi and Talkatora Garden stations. The DMRC is a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Delhi.

HCC is a partner in the joint venture and has a 33% share of the value, i.e. Rs 228.89 crore + Euro 48.08 lacs, excluding DVAT.

The contract covers design and construction of Twin Bored tunnels 2.2 Km long, with a finished internal diameter of minimum 5.6 m for single track railway, including access and ventilation shaft. "Cut and Cover" tunnel 1.27 km long with two underground stations (New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium) for twin track railway including ramps and reinforced concrete structures to the underground stations. It also includes external and temporary works for the metro rail transmission system link between New Delhi and Talkatora Garden.

This project is in a part of Airport Metro Express Line-I of DMRC's plan for the MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) and this project is to be completed in 32 months from the date of conclusion of the agreement.

New Delhi has a population of more than 15 million and more than 6 lacs traveling passengers. When this project is complete, the total length of the Delhi Metro would be more than 69 km over the metropolis. With the two new stations New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium is project is bound to ease metro traffic movement between the New Delhi and Talkatora Garden.

HCC has expertise in building major metro railways projects in India, specifically with India's first metro in Kolkata and more recently in New Delhi. In India's first underground rapid transit system in Kolkata HCC executed the metro work by using the "cut and cover" method in six different packages including the subway stations and this section was opened to the public in 1996. This project was awarded the Sarvamangala Award for Excellence in Construction in the field of Civil Engineering by Association of Civil Engineers (ACE), India in 1995.

HCC has already built a section of 4.142 km of the Delhi Metro project in a joint venture with M/S Kumagai Gumi (Japan), M/S Skanska (Sweden) and M/S Itochu (Japan). The highlight of the project was that it was completed eight months ahead of schedule in December 2004. This project is amongst the largest transportation infrastructure contracts to be executed in India in recent years.
