Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing and the Hindu Maha Sabha staged a protest today against a request by visiting Britons to pay a tribute to the valour shown by British soldiers during the 1857 revolt.
Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh), Sept. 24 : Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing and the Hindu Maha Sabha staged a protest today against a request by visiting Britons to pay a tribute to the valour shown by British soldiers during the 1857 revolt.
Wearing saffron coloured Gandhian caps and carrying black flags and banners, the protestors gathered in front of Hotel Usha Kiran to demonstrate.
Police arrested some of them.
"They were staging protests outside the hotel," said Atul Singh, Additional Superintendent of Police, Gwalior.
Britons, including seven successors of British soldiers who played key role in suppressing the rebellion, visited St. John's Church in Meerut with the intention of laying a plaque to commemorate the bravery of their forefathers.
The church, however, rejected their request.
Although mutiny tourism has been in the news for quite some time now, the administration of Meerut says it had no idea of any such trip taking place.
