National wrestling championship starts in J-K

Sports activities in Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) are all set to get a boost with the three-day national wrestling championship getting underway.

Srinagar, Sep 23 : Sports activities in Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) are all set to get a boost with the three-day national wrestling championship getting underway.

The 26th junior boys and 9th junior girl's national wrestling championship at Sher-i-Kashmir Indoor stadium would give a shot in the arm for sports activities in the region, said J-K Sports Minister Babu Singh.

"I am happy and feel proud that we are successful in continuously organizing national and mega events in Kashmir. Some days back we successfully conducted under-19 football tournament and now we are organizing this national junior wrestling championship," Singh said.

"It will leave a very positive message and it will revive the sports activities in the state, which had stagnated in the last 16 years," he added.

Around 600 wrestlers, which include boys from 23 states and girls from 15 states, are participating in the championship.

Participants said they were happy about the arrangements.

"It is really good, all states are participating. Last year at junior Championship in Pune, neither all the state teams participated nor there was proper tournament," said Rajeev, a participant from Delhi.
