Another incident of public taking the law in to its own hands came to light in Jharkhand when an angry mob killed three suspected thieves here on Thursday night.
Ramgarh (Jharkhand), Sept 21 : Another incident of public taking the law in to its own hands came to light in Jharkhand when an angry mob killed three suspected thieves here on Thursday night.
Police said that locals of Kothi village in the state's Ramgarh District were enraged to find out that the group of dozen men had entered their village to steal. They managed to catch three of the men, and then beat them up before slitting their throats.
"We have found out that some people came in to the area with the aim of theft. When the villagers came to know, they chased all of them and killed three," said Sanjiv Kumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Ramgarh.
The villagers defended their action by saying that the thieves were causing a huge menace in the area. In fact, residents of about 12 villages got together to guard the villages themselves after police refused to hear their plea.
"The thieves entered the village at night. When thousands of villagers who were guarding the area got to know of it they caught them and later and killed them," said Devki Nandan Bodia, a villager.
On September 13, a mob lynched 10 suspected robbers in Bihar.
In another incident, an angry mob in Bihar attacked three men after they were caught stealing a motorbike in Nawada District. One of them was blinded in one eye, and told police some of the attackers wanted to pierce their eyes, but others prevented them from doing so.
Within a few hours in the same district, another mob attacked young boys accused of stealing washing powder, and partly shaved their heads before parading them in front of television cameras.
Last month, policemen in Bihar helped a mob beat up a suspected thief in front of a television camera, with one policeman tying the victim to his motorbike and dragging him until he fell unconscious.
