Vaiko, supporters arrested over Salem protest

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko and around 900 of his supporters were arrested today when they attempted to stop railway traffic in protest against a compromise formula to resolve the Salem Division issue.

Coimbatore, Sep 19 : Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko and around 900 of his supporters were arrested today when they attempted to stop railway traffic in protest against a compromise formula to resolve the Salem Division issue.

According to compromise formula, Pollachi and Kinathukadavu will be shifted to to Palakkad Division in Kerala.

Vaiko and about 350 workers stopped the movement of the Podanur-Dindigul train around 10 a.m., following which they were arrested, a police official said.

He added that earlier, over 500 workers were arrested as they tried to stop two trains.

The workers raised slogans against the decision to take away the 79 km Palakkad-Pollachi-Kinathukadavu stretch.

The stretch is currently in Madurai Divison, and the protesters want that it should be handed over to the Palakkad Division, as a compromise formula to include Coimbatore and Tirupur in the newly created Salem Division.
