The discharge of water from the Valmiki Barrage has flooded some parts of surrounding villages in Bihars Gopalganj District.Villagers have been forced to abandon their straw and mud houses, and are now living in makeshift shelters on higher ground following the release of 57.5 million cusecs of water from the barrage.
Gopalganj (Bihar), Sept 17 : The discharge of water from the Valmiki Barrage has flooded some parts of surrounding villages in Bihar's Gopalganj District.Villagers have been forced to abandon their straw and mud houses, and are now living in makeshift shelters on higher ground following the release of 57.5 million cusecs of water from the barrage.
A resident Bhaisahi village said that some of the villages had carried their children on their shoulders to safety.
"The village is surrounded by waist-deep water. There is an acute shortage of food grains. There is just one boat, which only few people can use at a time," added Sharwan Chaudhary, another resident.
It is rumoured that over 100 villages in Bihar are submerged.
Over 660 people have died in flood-related incidents in Bihar during this year's monsoon season. .
Officials say over 2,000 people have died across the country.
