Panaji, Sept 16 : As many as 14 undertrials escaped Margao judicial lock-up, about 30 kilometres from here, when they were brought out of their cell to offer prayers on the Ganesh Chaturthi celebration on Saturday night.
The undertrials, six of whom are accused in cases of murder, robbery and dacoity, assaulted four jail guards before fleeing, police said.
An intensive combing operation has been launched to nab the undertrials, said police.
Superintendent of Police Shekhar Prabhudesai said that the search operation was launched immediately after they got information this morning.
Police are keeping a close watch on the Kadamba Transport Corporation bus terminals and Konkan Railway stations, and have sealed State borders.
Prabhudesai said that few of the undertrials are originally from Karnataka and Maharashtra.
