Rajapakad/Patna (Bihar)/New Delhi, Sept. 14 : The Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government in Bihar has ordered a probe into the lynching of ten suspected thieves in the State's Vaishali District.
A mob beat to death ten suspected robbers on Thursday in an act of vigilante justice in what is fast becoming a lawless region.
"Two cases are being filed. One case is that people beat the ten to death, and another one would be of burglary. We will start investigations soon," said Krishna Chaudhary, Inspector General of Police, Tirhut Range.
Relatives of the victims said they did not know where the later had gone and were shocked to hear the news of their deaths.
"I do not know where he went after having his meal. It was the cops who told me and brought his body," said Rupali, the wife of one of the suspected thieves.
Kumar said the authorities were looking at whether a pattern of vigilante justice was shaping up in the state.
"We are looking into whether it is emerging as a trend of sorts. We will analyse the crime records of the area. Is it that crime kept growing in the area and we failed to notice? Several such questions need to be addressed," Kumar said.
In New Delhi, Railways Minister Lalu Prasad said the lynching reflected the growing anarchy in the sate.
"Anarchy prevails in Bihar, and it is only deteriorating. There are no insights into the problem. What were the officers doing? They should have intervened," Lalu said.
Eight incidents of theft have been reported in area in the last three months.
Recently, an angry mob in Nawada District had blinded three youths because they tried to steal a motorcycle.
In another shocking incident in Bhagalpur, a man who tried to steal a necklace, was savagely beaten up by a mob. Police then tied him to a motorcycle and dragged him for some distance along the road.
