Agartala, Sept.13 : Expressing concern over the fast changing demography of northeast India, BJP President Rajnath Singh today said there was a need to identify Bangladeshi Muslim migrants and deport them forthwith.

The migrant Hindu population from that country, however, should be allowed to stay on as refugees.

Singh said infiltration from neighbouring Bangladesh was responsible for the region's backwardness and troubles.

The Indian Government should put pressure upon Bangladesh if it refuses to accept the deported Muslim population from the northeast region.

Singh, however, maintained that India's relations with neighbouring countries should not be bitter, and if necessary, New Delhi should agree to help Dhaka financially in the rehabilitation of the deported population.

On the militant issue, Singh said the government should have the political will to resolve the problem.

He blamed Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for providing funding, weapons and training to the region's rebel groups, some of whose leaders were being sheltered by Bangladesh.

The fencing of the Indo-Bangladesh border alone would not resolve the issue of infiltration, he said.
