Torrential rains damage road network in Uttarakhand

Torrential rains and landslides have badly damaged road network in Uttarakhand.

Garhwal (Uttarakhand), Sept. 11 : Torrential rains and landslides have badly damaged road network in Uttarakhand.

According to official estimates, recent rains, landslides and cloudbursts have damaged roads worth 300 million rupees in the Himalayan state.

"All roads have been washed away in rains. All the drainages are blocked and therefore the water is flowing on the road. The residents have called the District Magistrate and other officials. They have seen the condition of the roads but nothing has been done about it," said B.S. Kunwar, a resident.

According to the State Government officials, they have sanctioned enough funds for road repair.

"According to our estimate around 100 roads have been damaged due to rains and landslides. For that the Government has made available funds to all the districts of the state. They have been instructed to take whatever measures necessary to repair the roads," said U.K. Singh, Secretary, Public Works Department (PWD), Uttarakhand.

Landslides in the region are a common feature especially with heavy rains during the monsoon season.
