Rajasthan panchayat makes villagers strip to find rape accused

Every man in Rajasthans Boraj village was made to strip to his underwear while the village Panchayat carried out an investigation into the rape and murder of a woman.

Boraj (Rajasthan), Sept 11 : Every man in Rajasthan's Boraj village was made to strip to his underwear while the village Panchayat carried out an investigation into the rape and murder of a woman.

This was a way to find out the culprit.

Members of the panchayat inspected the bodies of around 1,500 men and boys for any signs of a violent struggle undergone during a rape.

"We came to know from doctors and police officers that it was a case of rape. So, to remove doubts from villagers' minds, we assembled all village men and made them strip. This is a fine example of unity in the village. We are now assured the culprit is not from among us," said Tarachand, a panchayat member.

Every male in the age-group of 10-60 years was inspected, including the panchayat members themselves.

However they found no marks that might connect any of the men with the crime.

The disfigured body of a 35-year-old village woman was discovered on Saturday night, police said.

The victim had gone out to feed her cattle, and did not return. The body was found on a hilltop.

According to Puran Chand, a police officer, investigating the case the victim had sustained axe wounds on the face, and lot of blood had been lost.

The investigations are on, police said.

Police said the panchayat's actions were separate to their own investigation.
