A Bill to provide social security to the workers in the unorganised sector was tabled in the Rajya Sabha today amid protests from the Left parties demanding separate legislations for agricultural and non-agricultural workers.
New Delhi, Sept 10 : A Bill to provide social security to the workers in the unorganised sector was tabled in the Rajya Sabha today amid protests from the Left parties demanding separate legislations for agricultural and non-agricultural workers.
Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes introduced the Unorganised Sector Workers Social Security Bill, 2007 in the Zero Hour, which witnessed noisy scenes over the issue of Indo-US civil nuclear deal.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the CPI has conveyed its reservations on the draft Bill to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance.
CPI-M Politburo member Brinda Karat said that the Government wanted to introduce the Bill just because it was promised in the National Common Minimum Programme.
Under the provisions of the Bill, a National Social Security Advisory Board will be set up that will recommend schemes for different sections of unorganised sector workers.
Over 400 million workers in the unorganised sector constitute nearly 95 percent of the country's total workforce.
