Jnana Pravaha Celebrates 60 Years of Indian Independence

Kolkota, West Bengal, India

Jnana Pravaha in association with The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) celebrated 60 glorious years of Indian Independence with an interactive session on cultural bondings with our neighbours. Christened 'Fusion Beyond Frontiers', this discussion with speakers from India and its neighbours Pakistan and Bangladesh brought alive the unity through cultural diversity.

Three nations….one vision. Jnana Pravaha through its deliberations, raised issues, delved into the past, unfolded minds, laced up a legacy and in the end struck a common chord which runs amongst the people of three nations - India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The idea of the interactive session was also to open up new boundaries and dwell into the minds of not only our people but our neighbours as well who form such an intrinsic part of our lives in the present day context.

The speakers at this interactive session included Shabana Azmi, Pawan Verma and Sheshadri Chari from India, Shaheen Salahuddin, Amin Hashwani and Muneer Kamal from Pakistan and Sultana Kamal and Md. Asafuddowlah from Bangladesh. The Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal Shri GopalKrishna Gandhi who himself is one of the leading exponents of cultural diversity delivered the keynote address. The guest of Honour at the event was the eminent Javed Akhtar.

The debate was preceded by the unfurling of Peace Flags (artworks by artists from the 3 countries) and Peace Kites - which was an initiative of Seagull Foundation. The peace messages were written on the kites by children from all three countries and these are displayed at the premises of all the events.

Speaking on this programme, Ms Madhu Neotia, Director, Jnana Pravaha Trust said, "It is a matter of honour that we at Jnana Pravaha have been able to put together a programme of this magnitude. The timing of it is so apt as our country celebrates its 60th year of independence and the need to bond culturally with our neighbours is as significant today as never before. In fact we at Jnana Pravaha do hope that this programme ignites many more such cross-boundary initiatives and helps in bonding with our neighbours. The deliberations made by the honourable speakers has made us sit up and notice various issues which we can tackle in days to come. In fact the onus of such cultural issues lies with each one of us and it is up to us to make a change in our little way."

Elaborating on this initiative, Ms Darshan Shah, Joint Director, Jnana Pravaha said, "The whole concept of the interactive session is to open us through dialogue as to whether fusion beyond borders exists or not. It is only apt that such a thinking is made by all of us at this moment of time. In fact Jnana Pravaha will strive to take this forward though various other programmes and events in the course of the next one year."

JNANA PRAVAHA, a Centre for Cultural Studies & Research was established in Varanasi 10 years ago. Smt. Bimla Poddar and Shri Suresh Neotia have been the founder trustees and the Centre promotes and nurtures, supports and propagates Indian cultures and heritage in its quintessential essence. Jnana Pravaha has opened centres in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata in 2007 to spread the awareness and promote the learning of our ancient heritage and culture.

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) was envisaged by its founder President, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, as an organization that would foster and strengthen cultural relations and mutual understanding between India and other nations & peoples. To facilitate this interaction among world cultures, the Council has striven to articulate and demonstrate the diversity and richness of the cultures of India.

The Council prides itself on being a pre-eminent sponsor of cultural & intellectual exchanges between India and partner countries. It is the Council's resolve to continue to symbolize India's great cultural efflorescence in the years to come.
