Indian Immunologicals Ltd. celebrates Silver Jubilee Year

Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL), a wholly owned subsidiary of National Diary Development Board celebrated its silver jubilee year today.

Hyderabad, October 25… Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL), a wholly owned subsidiary of National Diary Development Board celebrated its silver jubilee year today. IIL was set up by National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in October'1982 to produce Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) vaccine with technical collaboration from the Wellcome Foundation of UK. Currently, IIL ranks 8th among top Indian biotech companies and 6th among biopharma companies (Source: Biospectrum, 2007).

To mark the occasion and celebrate the 25 years of its existence, all senior employees who completed 25 years of service were honored with medals by Dr (Ms) Amrita Patel, Chairman, IIL in a function held at its office in Gachibowli. All employees joined the colourful celebrations along with their family members.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Amrita Patel reiterated IIL's commitment to the society to provide affordable immunity which goes beyond mere sales of vaccines. Now, IIL is a complete vaccination service provider. IIL won the international Animal Pharma award for "Corporate Social Responsibility" in 2006, she informed

"Raksha-FMD" vaccine was the first product launched by IIL in 1982. Later in 1998, IIL improved this to an oil adjuvanted vaccine-"Raksha-Ovac", which confers higher level of immunity compared to the conventional vaccine. Today, "Raksha-Ovac" is the No. 1 animal health brand with sales of Rs 48 Cr.

IIL supplies more than 80% of the FMD vaccine used in the FMD disease control programme in India. IIL is the largest manufacturer of FMD vaccine in Asia and among the top five in the world. Over the years, IIL launched several other veterinary biologicals such as Rabies vaccine (Raksharab), a range of canine vaccines, bacterial and other viral vaccines for large and small animals. IIL now ranks No.3 in animal health market in India.

Riding high on the success high quality veterinary vaccines, IIL ventured into the Human Health market by producing the first indigenously manufactured tissue culture Rabies vaccine- "Abhayrab" for human use in 1999. Human Biologicals Institute (HBI) was set up in Ooty exclusively to produce Abhayrab. Abhayrab is now one of the most popular anti-rabies vaccine brands in human health market.

Leveraging on its research strengths, launched several human vaccines such as r-DNA Hepatitis-B (Elovac-B), Measles (Abhay-M), MMR (Abhay-MMR), DPT (Abhay-TAG), Tetanus (Abhay-Tox), Equine Rabies immunoglobulin (Abhay-RIG) etc. With several international technical collaborations and new products in pipeline from R&D, IIL is all set to become the leader in Indian biopharma market.

IIL achieved all these through its partners such as veterinarians, medical doctors, NGOs, and a band of strongly committed people in IIL. There are few parallels, if any, to IIL's business model, where commitment to society and service to rural farmers comes before profits.

Indian Immunologicals Limited developed the novel concept of providing affordable and quality biologicals for human health through Abhay Clinics (AC) and Abhay Shoppe (AS) networks and Raksha Vaccination Centres (RVC) through its "Operation Pratirodh" programme for animal health. Veterinary doctors operate as franchise in case of RVC, while medical doctors in Abhay Clinics for human vaccines.

IIL has more than 2500 Abhay Clinics all across the country, operated by professional medical doctors providing "One-Stop vaccination services" to the community. Similarly, IIL has more than 700 Raksha Vaccination Centres across the country to provide vaccination services at the door step of the farmer in rural India. Abhay Shoppes provide vaccine at the door step of the doctor with just a phone call.
