Underground water leakage through oil pipes in Mehsana creates flood-like situation

Underground water is gushing out from oil pipelines in few areas in Gujarat over the past five days, causing flood-like situation.

Mehsana (Gujarat), Nov 29 : Underground water is gushing out from oil pipelines in few areas in Gujarat over the past five days, causing flood-like situation.

People are facing intense hardships as farmlands in Gamanpura village of Mehsana district has got filled with knee-deep water that is continuously gushing out of pipelines of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

ONGC officials claim the tests have revealed that no emission of any harmful gases or chemicals have taken place during the leakage.

"We have adopted a multi-fold strategy. We are going for direct intervention in the sewer. We are going to cap this well today and divert the flow of air from the affected tube well to its well side so that there is no inconvenience to the local people," said A K Gupta, Executive Director of the ONGC.

"We are monitoring the air that is blowing with sand on an hourly basis. There is no hazardous gas either carbon dioxide or sulphur dioxide," he added.

Though ONGC is trying to block the flow of underground water, the situation is not yet under control according to the locals.

Around 14 to 15 water tankers have been placed for the villagers and food arrangements have also been made by the ONGC.
