Centre mulls on creation of central agency to investigate terror cases

A special meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Union Home Ministry was held here today to discuss the creation a central law enforcement agency or federal investigation agency to investigate cases of terrorism and other related crimes that have inter-State and international ramifications.

New Delhi, Nov 29 : A special meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Union Home Ministry was held here today to discuss the creation a central law enforcement agency or federal investigation agency to investigate cases of terrorism and other related crimes that have inter-State and international ramifications.

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil chaired the meeting.

"Whenever some incident takes place in a State, the Government of India is expected to take action, but Police and Public Order being state subjects, the Centre has its own limitations. It has, therefore, become necessary to discuss the need for a Central agency to investigate certain types of crimes and the manner in which it should be done," a release from the Home Ministry stated.

During the meeting, members said that a proper law should be framed for a central agency to investigate such cases.

The final decision in this regard is expected to be taken after consultations with the State Governments.
