Soren laments plight of tribals in Assam

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Chief Shibu Soren has accused successive Central Governments of doing nothing for the upliftment of tribal communities.

Guwahati, Nov 27 : Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Chief Shibu Soren has accused successive Central Governments of doing nothing for the upliftment of tribal communities.

Soren said no government that came to power since independence from theritish rule in 1947 has taken any concrete step to uplift the lot of tribals.

"Till date, after independence, no government has taken any interest to uplift the status of the tribals in the country, nor have they shown any concern towards them. To ignore the people who form the backbone of the economy, is an offensive action on the part of the government," said Soren, who met injured in the hospital.

His comments came in the wake of a fierce violence that broke out onaturday between tribals demanding Scheduled Tribes status and local residents during a protest march by the former towards the State Assembly.

The tribals blamed the police for the Saturday's incident in Guwahati in which at least 12 people were killed.

Former Chief Minister Babulal Marandialso also visited the injured in the hospital.

Earlier, Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda urged the Assam Government to ensure the safety of tribals who had migrated to Assam.

BJP leader and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda said that the Tarun Gogoi Government has no moral right to continue and should quit. He also demanded a judicial probe into the Guwahati incident.

The Asom Gana Parishad and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have also demanded dissolution of the Congress-led coalition government and institution of a judicial probe.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) held the Assam Government responsible for Saturday's violence.
