Kiran Bedi opts for voluntary retirement

New Delhi, Nov 27 : India's first woman IPS (Indian Police Services) officer on Tuesday said that she has sought voluntary retirement, sparking a debate in the country about the treatment meted out to woman officers.

Bedi was a strong contender to become Delhi Police Commissioner, but the Government chose Y S Dadwal for the post, that reportedly made her unhappy.

However, today she said that her reason for opting voluntary retirement was purely based on her ''strong academic and social interest''.

"My desire to work from outside the system made me take this decision,' she said, rejecting reports that she was miffed over not being given a top-post in a para-military force.

''A few weeks ago, I submitted my application for VRS. I have not received any reply in this regard,'' Bedi added.

Bedi, who has been bestowed with Magsaysay Award for carrying out jail reforms in Tihar prison, says that she has no regrets in her 34-year long career.
