The BJP-affiliated Akhil Bharthiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest in Indore on Friday to retaliate against the rustication of 40 students by Devi Ahilya University authorities.
Indore, Nov 23 : The BJP-affiliated Akhil Bharthiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest in Indore on Friday to retaliate against the rustication of 40 students by Devi Ahilya University authorities.
These students were rusticated for their alleged acts of hooliganism during the recently held inter-college youth festival in the city.
The students had earlier created a ruckus during a folk dance competition, which was a part of the annual youth festival in the city.
On Thursday, seeking evidence from photographs and video clippings of the controversial cultural programme, Devi Ahilya University authorities held that two city-based colleges would not be allowed to conduct examinations for a year nor would they be allowed to participate in any cultural programmes organised under the aegis of the university.
Retaliating against the decision, the ABVP protestors issued a call for a shutdown at all the colleges of Indore.
To force the shutdown, protestors thronged the Arts and Commerce College and other institutions here, this morning. Amidst slogan raising, the protestors forced many colleges to suspend all activities.
To avoid any tension, the city administration deployed heavy police force at the colleges, while the protesters alleged that police personnel had manhandled some of them sitting on a peaceful protest.
"Despite the fact that it was a peaceful protest, the police authorities had beaten us up so severely that some of the students had sustained head injuries. To oppose the high handedness of the police and the administration, the student union is protesting. Our only demand is that the college authorities should immediately reinstate these rusticated students," said Gaurav Randev, student leader ABVP.
The students also burnt an effigy of the vice chancellor of Devi Ahilya University.
