The participants of this first ever contest were twenty three Mr. India Classic Body Building Competition participants held in Hyderabad. These Mr. Indias came to Hyderabad to participate in the Body Budiling event held in Hyderabad on Monday 18th, November. They are top five body builders of last year's competition from different states. These body builders came from 16 states from all over India like Tamilnadu, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Chandigarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh etc and represent organizations like Indian Railways, CRPF, Services and others.
The contest was organised by "The Pride Residency", a boutique hotel on the occasion of its inauguration. The Pride Residency boutique hotel has a multicuisine fine dining restaurant "Pride of Hyderabad", a Coffee Shop "Lime Light", a banquet hall "Occasions". It also offers meals on wheels facility called "Pride Express".
The organisers of the event has experience of conducting such an event. They have earlier in the year 2005 conducted one such contest for general public which many twin citians still remember. While that was conducted for the general public in city, this is little different as its participants are top five Mr. India winners of various states. The contest as usual has evoked lot of response.
The organisers made elaborate arrangements for the contest. The total area was decked up reflecting the true tradition of Hyderabadi culture. Even special costumes were arranged for the hotel staff and especially designed T-Shirts for the participants. All the participants were given T-Shirts for take home. The entry was restricted to 23 India participants only.
To create a proper ambience for the contest and they highlighted the uniqueness of the Hyderabadi Biryani. The entire venue was decked up with pin up boards/posters pasted on the walls which were especially prepared for the occasion. They all carried unique Limericks and interesting trivia on Biryani, its evolution, history, types, speciality etc painstakingly collected by the organisers from various sources. Some of the pin up boards talked about Do you know inputs like
Do you know that Biryani is the Dish to Die For
Biryani is a celebration dish which has transcended all barriers of caste and religion.
Hyderabadi biryani is the ultimate test of a good cook.
There's just one word to describe Hyderabadi cuisine - FIERY!
Hyderabadi Biryani is a heavenly dish made of Basmati Rice and Lamb meat...........
Do you know that there are over 26 varieties of biryani made in India?
.....though it is considered a royal dish of the Nizams and the Nawabs it was never ever served to the royal guests?
They also talked about different varieties of Biryani, about Taimur Lang who believed to have been brought biryani to city, misconceptions about biryani, how to make biryani(recipe) and what is the test of a good biryani etc and others.
A panel of judges for the contest include Col Balasubrahmanyam, national Weight Lifter, Refree and Jury and Mr. J. Sampath Kumar, a Food Connoisseur and Dr. Randheer, Executive Vice President of Indian Federation of Body Building Federation.
The judging criteria of this fun and frolic contest was the amount of consumption of biryani(by weight less bones left) in a stipulated time of ten minutes. Only mutton biryani was served for the contest due to two reasons. 1. Authentic biryani best reflects in mutton biryani 2. And also due to popular choice by contestants. The organisers have also made available a Medical Doctor and First Aid service in case of any unwarranted situation.
Conceptualised and executed by Mr. Wilson Rajan, a Hospitality Management Consultant and Mr. D. Ramchandram, a Media Consultant and Public Relations Practitioner from Solus Media, the "The Pride Residency", located at Trimulgherry Cross Roads embarked on this novel, friendly and unique contest for only body buildes "Mr. India's Hyderabadi Biryani Eating Contest" for the first time. There was no etry fee for the participation.
All the participants were given away a Memento of Charminar and a participation certificate with action photo affixed on to it.
The aim and purpose of the contest, according to Mr. Wilson Rajan, Contest Coordinator is to promote Hyderabadi biryani. The punchline is "eat more biryani, eat healthy and eat genuine Hyderabadi biryani."
According to Mohd. Ismail, Managing Director of the "The Pride Residency" "Hyderabad is a city of Nawabs and Kababs, Biryani and Sherwani". So our restaurant being The Pride of Hyderabad it goes well with our theme. Hence, we thought of organising this unique event". Looking at the overwhelming response we got in 2005 when we first organsied it on August 20 that year, we decided to organise the contest every year. Soon we will be organising Biryani Eating Contest for general public in a bigger way than we did in 2005, added Mr. Ismail.
The Spirit of Hyderabad is as follows
Special is Hyderabad's Biryani (cuisine) Typical is Hyderabad's zubani (language) Wonderful is Hyderabad's sherwani (clothes) Flexible is Hyderabad's zindagani (culture) Unforgettable is Charminar's charm and people's agvani (warmth).
Through these novel initiatives we would like spread the spirit of Hyderabad. Towards that direction we made elaborate arrangements by spending not less than couple of Lakh rupees. When we take up the next event for general public in near future this year, we will have prize money as Rupees one lakh or even more. We are committed for the cause of Hyderabadi Birayni. We will promote this in every possible way, informed the excited Managing Director. His excitement is so much that he himself wrote the caption for the contest "Biryani Challenge, Hai Dum?
