Intellectuals and eminent personalities on Thursday led a march in Kolkata to protest the violence in Nandigram over acquisition of farmland for an industrial hub.
Kolkata, Nov 16 : Intellectuals and eminent personalities on Thursday led a march in Kolkata to protest the violence in Nandigram over acquisition of farmland for an industrial hub.
Actors Saumitra Chatterjee and Mithun Chakraborty, singer Debarati Som, former footballer P K Banerjee and Chuni Goswani and famous magician PC Sorkar Junior were participated in the march.
"Everybody should come forward because there is false notion going on. We Bengalis are united. But there are certain forces, they want to break the unity and we won't allow it. That's why we have come here to let the people know that we are united," said Sorkar.
Meanwhile, a six-member National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team reached Nandigram to study the situation and suggest remedial measures.
A team headed by Senior Superintendent of Police S P Singh will visit violence-torn villages to look into the genesis of the problem.
The team will talk to a cross-section of people as well as the administration in the next two to three days.
The team will also look into the role of police and the local administration to ascertain whether there had been any lapse on their part.
Earlier, the NHRC issued a notice to the West Bengal Government directing it to submit a factual report on the conditions prevailing in Nandigram within 10 days.
The West Bengal Government had planned to set up a Special Economic ZoneSEZ) for chemical industries in Nandigram but had to abort the project as villagers refused to give their farmland for the project.
The row saw violent clashes between residetns opposed to the project and the communist supporters as well as police.
At least six villagers were killed and dozens injured in Nandigram last week in clashes between rival groups led by Communists and a frontal organisation backed by Trinamool Congress party.
