Darjeeling, Nov.16 : Darjeeling, described to be the "Queen of Hills" in India, has always been a big attraction for tourists. This year too, the all inviting hill station is witnessing a good influx of domestic and international tourists.
There has been 15 per cent jump in the tourists' inflow this year so far. But the tourism industry here is anticipating a further rise in the coming months, as it is just the beginning of tourist season here.
"Generally every year the numbers of tourists are increasing. This year also the number is increasing. We are getting a very good response. This year, there was a tremendous turnover of tourists especially in Darjeeling and Sikkim," said Gopal Lama, Director of the State's tourism department.
Last year, the tourist arrival witnessed a 25 per cent rise.
Samrat Sanyal, a tour operator said the increase in the tourist inflow is due to a sustained campaign by the tourism ministry.
"The area is promoted a lot by tour operators and the Government of India in the Incredible India campaign, in the ITB Berlin fair and other international trade fairs. The promo campaign is also going on and promoted by the government of India's tourism ministry. This will help in additional boost to tourism particularly in Darjeeling," said Sanyal.
Cradled in the hills of West Bengal, Darjeeling has always been a favourite destination for tourists because of the snow-capped mountains, including a breathtaking view of Kanchenjunga peak and the pristine beauty of the Himalayas.
Famous world over for its 'Darjeeling Tea', the hill town is the epicentre of India's most celebrated tea growing district and has possibly the most picturesque views among all Indian hill resorts.
Situated at a height of 2,134 meters, Darjeeling is also famous for its 125-year-old railway, a UNESCO world heritage site that attracts hundred thousands of tourists to the picturesque hill station.
