D-Link unveils India's first environment friendly technology for networks

Launches 'Green Ethernet' range for products

Mumbai, 15th November 2007: D-Link India Ltd., India's premier networking company today unveiled its innovative 'Green Ethernet' Technology Gigabit switches which help reduce power consumption and provide energy costs savings without sacrificing operational performance or functionality.

The D-Link® 'Green Ethernet' range of switches which targets SMB users, have been designed in response to the call for a more eco-friendly concept in saving the earth's environment as part of the global warming alert. D-Link, in support of the green concept, is happy to take the lead in being the first in the networking industry to incorporate this concept into their network connectivity devices. D-Link "green' products are compliant with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) since 2006 and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) since 2005, which are both implemented across the European Union Member States. RoHS directives restrict the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants. WEEE directive aims at minimizing the impact of electrical and electronic goods on the environment by increasing re-use and recycling, and reducing the amount of WEEE going to landfill.

D-Link's Innovative 'Green Ethernet" Technology

As market pressure and legislative action worldwide continue to demand for greater improvements in energy efficiency, D-Link recognizes the importance of saving power in its networking products and has actively studied the feasibility of an innovative 'Green Ethernet" technology. The result of this is the birth of D-Link's Innovative 'Green Ethernet" Technology, which implements special power-saving features that detects link status and cable length to adjust power usage. With this technology, power consumption of network devices can be greatly reduced, which means less heat dissipation, extended product life, and lower operating costs. Some of the key benefits of D-Link Innovative 'Green Ethernet" Technology include:

Saving power when desktop-to-switches are idle

Users often shutdown their computers at night but rarely turn off their switches. Most switches today still consume considerable power even when a cable link or desktops-to-switch is turned off. In a scenario such as this, D-Link's Innovative 'Green Ethernet' Technology will put the port in a "sleep mode", thus reducing power used by that port, and at the same time saving power.

Optimizing power usage on dynamic detection of cable length

Under normal circumstances, most switches will by default send full power to fulfill a 100m cables reach regardless of the cable length. In a typical users' environment, however, the cable is usually less than 20m. Under such application, D-Link's Innovative 'Green Ethernet' Technology will automatically detect the cable length, and optimally adjust the power usage to save energy. For example, a port connected to a 7m cable will only use as much power as it needs instead of full power required for 100m cables.

D-Link's Innovative 'Green Ethernet' Technology Provides More Benefits to Customers

Gigabit Ethernet market growth has been forecasted to rise significantly in the coming years with rapid succession over the 10/100Mbps market for port shipments. To address the needs of different users and applications, D-Link therefore chooses to first include the Innovative 'Green Ethernet' Technology in their SOHO gigabit switches. These switches are designed to be extremely easy-to-use so that no extensive management or setup is required, and to provide economy of scale. The switches are able to fulfill essential needs of Home/SOHO, midsize networks, and branch office LANs.
