In a joint operation, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Indian Army shot dead five militants in two encounters in Trehgam area of Kupwara District on Wednesday.

Srinagar May 9 : In a joint operation, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Indian Army shot dead five militants in two encounters in Trehgam area of Kupwara District on Wednesday.

According to Vijay Kumar, Kupwara Senior Superintend of Police, they got specific information that a group of militants was hiding in Sangranpati village. Following this, police, along with 17 Dogra, immediately launched a joint operation.

Two militants were killed in this encounter while others managed to flee to a neighbouring village in Dard Hare. Police and the troops followed them, and here 14 Grenadiers also joined. In the ensuing gunfight, three more militants were killed.

The two houses the militants were hiding in also suffered damage, the SSP added.

He said that the group had recently infiltrated and it is believed that most of them were having allegiance with the LeT. He further said that five rifles three of which were in damaged condition were recovered with some ammunition.

The houses belonging to BashirAhmed Lone and Mohammed Munwar were damaged.
