Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has congratulated Nicolas Sarkozy on his election as the next President of France.

New Delhi, May 9 : Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has congratulated Nicolas Sarkozy on his election as the next President of France.

Singh also spoke of the friendship between India and France, and said he was looking forward to meeting Sarkozy.

Conservative candidate Nicolas Sarkozy won the French presidential election on Sunday. He secured 53.06 per cent of the votes cast, as compared to the 46.94 percent votes won by Socialist Segolene Royal.

The total turnout was an estimated 85 percent.

Sarkozy, 52, the son of a Hungarian immigrant, will take over the French presidency from 74-year-old Jacques Chirac, who has completed two terms in office.
