Manmohan Singh files nomination for Rajya Sabha (Lead:PM Nomination)

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, whose current term in the Upper House of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha ends on June 14, filed his nomination papers today for re-election in biennial polls to be held later this month.

Guwahati, May 9 : Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, whose current term in the Upper House of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha ends on June 14, filed his nomination papers today for re-election in biennial polls to be held later this month.

Dr. Singh filed his nomination in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev, who accompanied him to the State Legislative Assembly this morning.

Dr. Singh is on a two-day visit to Guwahati.

Election for the seat represented by him will be held on May 24, when polling for another Rajya Sabha seat held by Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Indramoni Bora will also take place.

Notification for the election was issued on Monday. The last date of filing of nominations is May 14 and the papers will be scrutinised on May 15.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 17. Counting of votes will take place on May 24.

Singh, an All India Congress Committee (AICC) member from Assam and Punjab, became Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha when he was elected for a third term in 2001.

Two years later, he became Prime Minister, after Congress President Sonia Gandhi declined the post.

Security arrangements are at their peak in the city in the wake of an ULFA (United Liberation Front of Asom) bomb attack at Fancy Bazar on Sunday, in which at least 19 people were injured.
