A city court has sent three senior police officials, who were accused of killing a Muslim man two years ago in a fake encounter, to a further week of judicial custody.

Ahmedabad, May 9 : A city court has sent three senior police officials, who were accused of killing a Muslim man two years ago in a fake encounter, to a further week of judicial custody.

"As the arrested police officers' 14-day remand period ended, the court directed that they be sent to Sabarmati Central Jail on judicial custody," said Arvind Pandya, counsel for M.N. Dinesh Kumar, one of the three accused police officials.hree other policemen arrested in the case were also produced in the court.

D.G. Vanzara and Rajkumar Pandyan from Gujarat and Kumar from Rajasthan Police were arrested last month for the fake encounter death of Sohrabuddin Shiekh and his wife Kausar Bi.

Sheikh was wanted in several cases of extortion and murder.

Police had claimed that Sheikh was an operative of terror Lashkar-e-Taiba and was planning to assassinate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Last week, intelligence reports leaked to the media warned of a threat to the officers' lives at the Sabarmati Central Jail.andya, however, said that the defence wasn't aware of the threat.

"If there is a threat, we would know. We are not aware of any threat," he said.

The fake encounters have triggered a nation wide debate over staged encounters by security forces at the behest of their political bosses.

The Parliament is witnessing furore for last few days, as the ruling Congress and its allies and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), locked horns over the issue.
